What kind of sex toy is better?Generally, the best types of sex toys are those that are easiest to clean, it’s always a good idea to use latex barriers with your toys too. When deciding which sex toy is better to use by your self or with a partner, the main factor is personal preference. Make sure to communicate with your partner about what you prefer and what they prefer. For more information about different types of sex toys available, visit sextoyguides.com. Where can I get tested and does it hurt?A great place for UCSB students to get STI testing is at our very own Student Health Service. There are also many other off-campus resources like Pacific Pride Foundation and Planned Parenthood. Neighborhood clinics, like the Isla Vista Medical Clinic and the Goleta Pacific Oaks Medical Center, often have these services as well. STI testing for males can be as simple as a urine test which is painless; swab tests are no longer needed for male testing! Student Health offers a convenient walk-in service for males that is completely confidential and requires only filling out forms and going to the lab. When requested, STI testing for females can be done easily along with annual exams or pap smears. Females can easily make appointments at Student Health for STI testing by visiting the website’s appointment page. The level of discomfort during testing is different for every female and is rarely painful. Also, HIV testing can now be done using a mouth swab rather than the traditional blood test. It is also free in many places like Pacific Pride Foundation, Planned Parenthood and Santa Barbara County Public Health. Student Health offers a simple walk-in test for males and females that requires only filling out a form and going to the lab. Latex condoms are the most common and effective but there are alternatives for people that are allergic to latex like polyurethane. Each individual may have his or her own preference as to what type of condom he or she enjoys using. Condoms range in sizes, styles (ribbed, studded, extra lubrication, etc.), colors and even flavors. The best way to determine what condom is the best for you is to try out different types. Does UCSB have more STI’s than other campuses? Many people often equate UCSB’s party school reputation with more risky sexual behavior leading to higher STI rates. However, UCSB falls within the national average of STI rates among college campuses in the United States. In fact, 22% of UCSB student report practicing abstinence which includes refraining from penile/vaginal, anal and oral sex. The majority of UCSB students know their partners for at least one month before having sex and has an average of 1.4 partners per year. (Cited: Baldwin’s survey) What is the most prevalent STI at UCSB?The most prevalent bacterial STI at UCSB is Chlamydia, which can be easily treated and cured with antibiotics. HPV is the most common viral STI. Fortunately, the vaccine for HPV (Gardisil) has recently been created and is recommended for most. However, the true number and type of STI’s that exist on any campus is impossible to know because this information is limited to people who get tested or report this information on surveys. Since the most common symptom of an STI is no symptom, many people have no idea they need to get tested. This is why it is very important to get tested on a regular basis. Not only does testing ensure that you will receive the appropriate treatment, but it can also decrease anxiety, which undoubtedly increases pleasure. Testing is a great way to improve communication between partners, which can help lead to better relationships. |
